Getting your roof decking to sit flush with the rafter tail edge is one of those details that matters more than it might seem. If the first course of decking overhangs the rafter ends or falls short, you'll end up with a roof edge that looks uneven from the ground and creates problems when it's time to install the fascia and soffit. The Dodge Hanger system gives you a clean, accurate way to nail that first course every time.
The Challenge with Starter Row Roof Decking
Roof decking installation is straightforward once you're up and rolling β the existing decking acts as a guide for each new sheet. But that very first row is tricky because you have nothing to reference it against. It has to be set by eye or by measurement, and holding a heavy 4x8 sheet steady on a sloped roof surface while trying to nail it is nobody's idea of a good time.
Using the Dodge Hanger Top Leveler on the Roof
The Dodge Hanger Top Leveler works just as well on roof rafter tails as it does on wall mudsills. Here's the basic process:
First, establish and mark your starting point above the roof edge at each end of the roof. This mark should account for the proper thickness of the decking (or fascia, if applicable) that will be installed. Snap a chalk line between the two points.
Place the two outside corners of the DHTL on the chalk line, using the alignment sight for accuracy. Lightly hammer the quick-mount stab tab to hold it in place, then complete the installation using approved fasteners. Install a DHTL on each rafter end.
Setting the Decking
Once your Top Levelers are mounted, place your decking material onto the saddles. The panels lock into the hangers, holding them in position for a no-movement nail-off. Because every hanger is aligned to the same chalk line, the bottom edge of your first course will sit perfectly flush with the rafter ends β all the way across the roof.
From there, you nail off and move on to the next course. The first row sets the standard for everything that follows.
What If There's No Fascia?
If you're installing roof decking without fascia on the building, the Dodge Hanger Bottom (DHB) is the right tool instead of the Top Leveler. It's designed for flush installations and works the same way β mount to the rafter ends, set the decking, nail off. It's especially useful on outbuildings, sheds, and other structures where a fascia board isn't part of the plan.
A Cleaner Roof Starts at the Bottom
It might sound simple, but getting that first course of decking perfectly flush with the rafter edge makes every part of the roofing process easier and cleaner. The Dodge Hanger system makes that first course something you can knock out quickly and confidently, even working solo.
